Grüningen
The charming country village, three museums, the botanical garden, idyllic views and the varied natural landscape welcome you. The spring market and the bailiff's market in autumn are real attractions and invite you to linger and enjoy this beautiful place.
The main road through the narrow village is short, but it is worth taking the time to wander through the alleyways and squares. Small as it is, it contains a wealth of architectural treasures. It almost looks like a photographic model when the visitor approaches from the north and sees the striking silhouette of the row of houses with the somewhat isolated castle and church complex. Its beautiful structure is an excellent example of the old architecture of a small town. Alongside the main street are stately stone houses, half-timbered buildings and Baroque arches, as well as dreamy side streets and fountains.
The castle is Grüningen's landmark: it occupies a prominent place in the "Stedtli" and gives the village its unmistakable face. Recently renovated, the elegant old rooms shine in new splendour. Each room can rightly be called a bijou, because its old style and substance have been preserved with great sensitivity during the renovation.
The Grüningen Botanical Garden, founded on a private initiative, has been a foundation of the Zürcher Kantonalbank since 1987. It is managed according to the criteria of ecology, the study of species diversity (biodiversity) as well as species and nature conservation. It offers insights into the immense diversity of native and exotic plants. The garden is open from 1 April to 31 October, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
