Niedergesteln
In Niedergesteln you will find the remains of a castle, the beautifully maintained old farming village with Wefahaus and clock museum, as well as the accessible Eiszeit cave through the castle hill. Another highlight is the suspension bridge that stretches across the Jolischlucht gorge. It is a fantastic demonstration of how nature and modernity enrich each other.
Niedergesteln was possibly founded by Savoyard merchants in the 11th century as a partially fortified trading post. 1000 years later, structures from that time are still recognisable. The historic buildings, the alleys and squares are maintained with great attention to detail and skill. The knights' village is one of the oldest and most charming villages in our country. The castle on the rock near Niedergesteln was built largely of tuff stone. Tuff stone is the ejected product of volcanoes that has solidified. It has existed for almost 1,000 years and has sheltered many brave knights and castle lords in its long history. The church square has been beautifully restored in recent years and decorated with sculptures by the famous artist Carl Constantin Weber. At the western end of the square is an information stand on the UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch
